Journal rankings pretty dumb idea after all, guy admits. Instead of ‘rankings’, there will be ‘lists’, and ‘profiles’ and something to do with frequency of publication or something. This is ‘refining’, or if you prefer, a ‘reform’, whatever that means. And so on and so forth. Note the apparently axiomatic logic of even this account.
We like (a) how these classifications and metrics, despite their relations with interesting things like funding, are imagined as impartial representational frames for capturing action, rather than actually having all purposive action oriented specifically to them, and (b) how continually changing the shape of the ‘tools’ totally does not imply that we might not be comparing like with like: permanent revolution in the bureaucracy!
